*NEW from Mrs. Foltz this week (4/28/21): General
Tone quality and blend are very nice
Notes and rhythms have come a long way. Continue to work out any trouble spots. Check yourself by utilizing a metronome. This can be a useful tool for revealing measures or sections that need additional study/practice.
Be sure that you know how long notes are to be held. Be sure to observe all rests. Mark any rests which may sneak up on you. Draw arrows to help remember to hold long(er) notes for the full value, or write in the counts. Cutting off a note too soon could lead to entering too soon at the next entrance following that note and or a combination of notes/rests.
Execute articulations as indicated in your parts. Use indicated articulations to assist you in staying rhythmically accurate. Review your music for staccato notes and accents. Note any lift indications.
Continue to practice with a metronome
Continue to pay close attention to dynamics. Playing the dynamics as printed make a huge difference in musicality and in conveying and evoking emotion.
Remember to be aware of bow distribution and practice the same (especially zoning in on trouble spots). Working backwards can be helpful (“Where do I need to be in the bow at a certain point?” then “How will I get there?”
Menken/Kazik – Music from Walt Disney Pictures’ Enchanted
Here is the YouTube clip “That’s How You Know” that we talked about having you watch! Enjoy!
*NEW from Mrs. Foltz this week (4/28/21):
Look for and mark subito dynamics…surprises for the audience!
All….practice mm. 37-64 and transitioning into and out of this section.
Practice for continuity. Play with a friend or sibling of possible.
Soon Hee Newbold – Orion and the Scorpion
*Consider putting the metronome on and counting your music aloud (rather than playing it). There are some very tricky rhythms. Try to understand them and play them well!
Review all. Listen with your score in front of you. Practice transitions especially.
Borodin/Monday – Symphony No. 2, Mvt. 4
*NEW from Mrs. Foltz this week (4/28/21):
Sections like 106-108 have improved. Yay!!
Regarding tempo, when your section has the contrasting lyrical melody, always be aware of the driving rhythm played by the other sections.
Williams/Custer – John Williams Trilogy
Practice mm. 1 to 34 (“Star Wars”)–know your part well!
Review all!!
Since the recording above cuts out and doesn’t include the entire piece, here is a YouTube video that does include the whole piece:
