August 23, 2023 Homework Accelerando

Welcome Accelerando!

Nice work this week everyone! It was great to see the excellent progress you all have already made. I am so happy to work with a group with such a great work ethic.
Some of the spots from last week are better, but still need some work, so are still included here along with some additional things.
Everyone: Prepare the first 16 measures of Russian Dance.
We will also try to do measures 1-42 of Brave Fires. Please have that prepared, especially rhythm! There are many independent parts in that piece, so everyone needs to count carefully and listen to the recording especially on that one.
We will also be reviewing Cripple Creek and Barcarolle, so please don’t forget about those ones either.

Practice any spots you feel you need work on in addition to the following:
1st Violins:
Barcarolle: Be Ready to play to the end. Watch out for rhythm and accidentals
1) Practice measures (mm) 1-20 with repeats (watch out for the new bowing on the repeat)
2) Practice mm 21-43, watch out for for C natural in mm 22 and 26 (low 2), and the switch back to C# in mm 29
Cripple Creek: Be ready to play all of this next week 🙂
1) mm 21-37 for rhythm. Clap it first, while making sure to say “rest” out loud whenever you see one. After you can clap it well, try to play it.
2) mm 46- end. Watch out for rests.
3) Reminder: the comma (,) in the music means to lift the bow, make a circle, and set it down, all before the next thing you have to play. Practice this by itself when it happens in mm 35
Brave Fires:
Be ready to play at least from 1-42. Practice counting the rests! Even if you still need work on the left hand, I will be very impressed if you all can play this with good rhythm next week.
1) Note the multiple down-bows in the beginning. After each one, lift, circle, and set the bow down before playing the next down bow. Practice this slowly.
2) Say “rest” out loud whenever you have one
3)18-26: practice clapping the rhythm, say “rest” when you have them
2nd Violins:
Barcarolle: Be ready to play all of this.
1) Practice mm 13-20 with repeat. Include counting the rest in your practice. Note the new direction of the bow on the repeat
2) mm 36-43. Watch out for C# (high 3 on G string)  D# (this is played with a Low 1 on D string). Practice this slowly, with the correct bowing (start on up bow)
Cripple Creek: Be ready to play all of this next week 🙂
1) mm 21-37 for rhythm. Clap it first, while making sure to say “rest” out loud whenever you see one. After you can clap it well, try to play it.
