September 27, 2023 Homework Accelerando

Welcome Accelerando!

Great work on Sectionals today!

I heard really great things from our sectional coaches about the work you all did! Please make sure to practice several times this week to ensure that all the hard work you did does not go to waste. It is really hard for things to stick if you do not review it at home.
Barcarolle is not a piece you can play well without working outside of our class time. Please find time every day, even if only 5-10 minutes to get some practice done.
Please also continue listening to the pieces, this will minimize the amount of practice needed to understand the rhythms and learn what the pitches sound like. Continue practicing the other pieces as well, as we will continue working on them in the future.

Violin 1:  The method I suggest for working on this is:

0) Shoulder bow and count/sing rhythm (one two THREE, etc.). This step may not be needed all the time, but use this if step 1 or 2 is so difficult they can’t power through.

1) Separate bows, hold each pitch until it is at least  mostly in tune
2) With the bowing, but stopped slur bows (e.g. up up  but with a big space for them to find their next note)
3) Slower but with the original bowing.
4) Once they got it, do it three times in a row
Barcarolle:
1) 63-71 (split that long bow into down and then up)
2) 71-72
3)37-43
4) 29-36
Work on Retakes in Russian Dance and Brave Fires (make sure they set the bow on the string one 8th note before pulling it (so the quarter note before will be cut short to give them time to do this.)
Violin 2: Use the suggested method of practice for all these spots
0) Shoulder bow and count/sing rhythm (one two THREE, etc.). This step may not be needed all the time, but use this if step 1 or 2 is so difficult they can’t power through.

1) Separate bows, hold each pitch until it is at least mostly in tune
2) With the bowing, but stopped slur bows (e.g. up up but with a big space for them to find their next note)
3) Slower but with the original bowing.
4) Once they got it, do it three times in a row
-36-47. Watch out for the C#s (high3s) and D#s (low1s) and work on moving between low1-regular 1. The pizzacato is still C#.
-63-71. Watch out for C# (high 3) and D#(low1)
-71-77: Watch out for High 3s (C#) and practice the slurs, they are tricky!
-13-21: practice for bowing and counting
Viola: The method I suggest for working on this is:
0) Shoulder bow and count/sing rhythm (one two THREE, etc.). This step may not be needed all the time, but use this if step 1 or 2 is so difficult they can’t power through.

1) Separate bows, hold each pitch until it is at least mostly in tune

3) Slower but with the original bowing.
4) Once they got it, do it three times in a row

1) 37-47
2)71-77
3)47-53 (mostly for counting)
Brave Fires:
1) 9-16
Cellos/Basses:  The method I suggest for working on this is:
0) Shoulder bow and count/sing rhythm (one two THREE, etc.). This step may not be needed all the time, but use this if step 1 or 2 is so difficult they can’t power through.

1) Separate bows, hold each pitch until it is at least  most in tune
2) With the bowing, but stopped slur bows (e.g. up up but with a big space for them to find their next note)
3) Slower but with the original bowing.
4) Once they got it, do it three times in a row
Barcarolle:
1) 55-73 (review how to find D# as well)
2)63-71
3)29-37 (Review how to find G#, and in the final step, include counting the rest)
4) 41-47 (review how to find C#)
5) 77-85
